My cousin Dr. Urmila Tarawade, insisted me to cover Dr. Taru on my youtube show 'Women's Special Express'. After that, I could never stop learning about Dr. Taru. Our first phone call left me with feeling that I talked to living saint. After our recording as well I busted into tears. Through out that day, I cursed God why he had play his inning so evil. No matter what landed in her fate, she is still walking tall and contributing her life in most beautiful way.
I recently finished her book on "A Doctors experiments in Bihar", journey truly crafted by Dr. Taru with inspiration of Dr. Prakash Amate and Dr. Abhay Bang. How born and brought up metro city girl, decides to move in Bihar for her contribution to the needy once and how she makes a difference as a doctor, friend and family member to each person in town is breathtaking story to read.
Being gynecologist, ideally she should have focused on patients, training local medical staff with most recent techniques but as she sees condition of hospital, she began to work as a cleaner...With the help of government admins she brought confirmative changes in district hospital. The hospital which was once filled with dogs and trash and no doctors transformed to an extend that it got rewarded for most cleaned, disciplined district hospital in Bihar over just couple of years. Her journey did not stop to one hospital but transfiguring many primary cares from villages to Masadhi rural area in Bihar, where medical facility did not existed ever.
Her leadership through acts of working is commendable. Her creative solutions to bring people together the way they like and educating them for medical disciplines and advices were prodigious. She made training programs simpler for local medical staff, as she worked through their belief systems. She inspired and built local medical staff, Asha workers skillfully. She worked as mother to everyone in medical centers and villages. She worked for each type of patient, focusing on women and children.
Many of us may feel, as a doctor it's easy to contribute to villages or uneducated areas, however after reading this book, I learned it's impossible to work with people whose superstitious belief systems are strong. It's impossible to think and work calmly by letting once degree credential off with people, who may throw word swords everyday at you to challenge your knowledge out of no credibility. It's impossible to love and care, work with same energy and passion for patients who may not trust you. For all this to happen, one must have deep inner drive to change people for their good and abundance of love for people around you to accept their ignorance and work through their belief system. That's where I find, Dr. Taru standing tall throughout and making a difference.
When brain tumor incident turned down young lady how she looked at it and moved on to work in lactation consulting area is praiseworthy. Readers heart goes out after learning, Dr. Taru will never be able to conceive being so young, who have spent relentless days and nights to see happy mothers and babies. Have made efforts in every stage of medical care to have this happened and trained staff with heart.
Goodbye event from Masadhi simply touches the reader and helps acknowledge, nothing goes in vain when someone worked through heart and right intent. When entire village gathered to meet Dr. Taru while departing for good from their place, they cried as if their mother is leaving them. Finally, everyone appreciated her efforts and at least now they will seek right medical advices and open their wings soothes the reader.
Success of this book is not just experiencing a journey as if one has lived it but to take motivation further that everyone must contribute to the needy part of the world with whatever skills they have and in whichever area they can work, with right intent. As Dr. Taru says, we are focusing on one percent improvement that leads to hundred at the end!
Please note : I have read Marathi translation of "A Doctors experiments in Bihar" - "हां ये मुमकिन है|" by Rama Hardikar-Sakhdev and it has really came out good. I generally don't prefer translated books however this translation is simply amazing to count on!
